Top 10 Family Photographer 2024 Award
The single photograph that made it into the top 10 of ‘The Best Family Photographer’ Awards with Click & Company, why the wild card always wins, and many many thanks.
Well November is off to a flying start, how exciting I just found out that I have been awarded Top Ten Family Photographer 2024 in the Documentary category by the lovely people at Click Pro Photographers. I keep going back to the results page to check i’m not completely mistaken - I literally never won anything in my earlier life, apart from the colouring competition in the Bolton evening News (which was probably just as thrilling at the time)!
The best photographers awards is an ongoing competition from Click & Company designed to spotlight the very best photographers across different genres throughout the year, celebrating the artistry, skill, and passion of photographers from around the world. The winners were chosen from 4,000 submissions with the highest vote from the judging panel for a single image.
I enter a few photography awards throughout the year, some of which i’m very grateful to win! I mainly enter because It’s fun to be part of community networks such as Click Pro Photographers, entering awards now and then keeps me on my toes, inspires future work, forces me to evaluate past work and hopefully helps my work to be seen. I often feel silly when my work gets recognised but I remind myself to celebrate the win.
The Single Photograph that made it and why I love this image
Interestingly I think this image was the wild card I threw in at the end! I love it because it’s a photograph of my son at York Shambles Market, whilst a group of us were eating lunch around the picnic tables, my son spotted a pigeon and started chasing it, I ran over, took one shot and here it is. I’m always a bit disappointed that the pigeon flew up out of view, but maybe it’s more interesting to the viewer that way? I love my sons body position, and the way the market stall holder is watching him, wondering what the heck is going on!
“Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack, a crack in everything,
That’s how the light gets in.”
Anthem, Leonard Cohen
The Honourable Mention
This image was taken on Lucy’s birthday (centre), we’d sang happy birthday and cut the cake, the children already devouring it before we’ve even sat down, crumbs everywhere, a typical scene in our household (and many others no doubt)! I like how my sons legs frame his face, the girls face planting the cake with the newspapers thrown to the side whilst Dad surveys the scene with his freshly cut piece of cake.
Many thanks
Thank you to all the families, friends, next door neighbours, couples, businesses and pets who have invited me into their homes, lives and conversations. I’m forever truly grateful and honoured to spend my days making photographs that matter.
